As the grandson of a casket maker, our founder, the late Gene Hutchens, was a part of funeral service since birth. A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Gene taught at the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science and the American Academy of Funeral Service in New York City before establishing his own funeral home. In 1955, Gene and Rosemarie, his wife, founded the Florissant Mortuary in Old Town Florissant, MO. Ten years later in 1965, he then built the current Hutchens Mortuary facility located at 675 Graham Road in the heart of Florissant.

In every sense…a family business

Although Gene is no longer with us, Hutchens Funeral Homes carries on Gene’s legacy and vision through his successive generations. His son, second-generation funeral director John Hutchens, serves as president and a co-owner of the firm. Gene’s grandson, Mark Hutchens, is a third-generation funeral director and works with his father, John, as a co-owner and managing director of Hutchens Funeral Homes. Nancy DeJarnatt, Gene’s eldest daughter, manages the prearrangement services and has been with the family business for over 30 years.

Building upon our legacy…

In January of 2016, the Hutchens family expanded with the purchase of the Stygar Family of Funeral Service. With no children entering into the family business, it was important to the Stygar family that another local family continue the wonderful legacy of service they began in 1937. The Stygar family, including third-generation funeral directors Steve Stygar and Greg Stygar, remain active with the funeral homes. Hutchens Funeral Homes currently operates three facilities: Hutchens Mortuary & Cremation Center in Florissant, Stygar Florissant Chapel & Cremation Center, and the Hutchens-Stygar Funeral & Cremation Center in St. Charles county.

This union ultimately benefits you – as we are now able to serve the families of St. Louis, St. Charles, Florissant, and beyond with our convenient locations and combined 140 years of expertise and care.
