A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, Gene taught at the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science and the American Academy of Funeral Service in New York City before establishing his own funeral home. In 1955, Gene and Rosemarie, his wife, founded the Florissant Mortuary in Old Town Florissant, MO. Ten years later in 1965, he built the current Hutchens Mortuary facility located at 675 Graham Road in Florissant. Rosemarie Hutchens, now in her nineties, still resides at the family's long-time residence in the heart of Florissant.
